New iPhone

September 15, 2018

You know there is a new iphone coming out soon that will have more features than ever before. EVERYONE wants it, will pay outreageous amounts for it and will line up to get it. Sounds like bullshit to me.

The marketing will tell you that everyone wants it. Marketing will tell you that everyone NEEDS it. Marketing will tell you that YOU need it. I dont know about you, but I dont need it. Stop listening to the marketing. It will control you like a little puppet to buy the bigger house, car and get you to stop eating healthy meals at home.

I saw a couple of their videos that show all the new features. While some of the features are quite amazing, I just dont think that everyone needs to rush out and buy the new iphone. In fact, I dont think people need to go out and buy a iphone 7 or iphone 8 either.

You know that the iphone 7s are still about $550 brand new?? Wow, for a phone that you are going to use for a year or two. The iphone 8s are still over $700. And that is just the cost of the phone. Lets say you get insurance in case you lose it or break it. That is going to run you from $5 to about $30 PER MONTH. That is an extra $60 to over $350 per year.

Now I can see getting insurance for a car that I paid 20k or maybe 25k, but for a $600 phone?? Are you crazy. First of all I would not pay $600 for a phone that will last 2 or 3 years to begin with. But if I spent $600 on anything, I am going to take care of it like you cant imagine.

In my lifetime, I have gotten 1 phone wet that did not work anymore. I ended up getting a new one for the retail, expensive price without the discounts. It ended up costing about $300. Not too bad, but that was a Galaxy S5 or something like that.

Usually my phone is in my left hand or my left front pocket. I do buy a $20 cover so that I can protect it from drops and bumps. That is my insurance. If I am stupid enough to drop my phone in the toilet, jump in the pool with it or other dumb stuff, thats my fault and I dont deserve to own a $600 anything.

So the new iphone has “The biggest screen ever for an iphone”. Big deal. Do you really need a bigger screen? Screens have gotten so big already that they are huge compared to just several years ago. It was just about 7 or 8 years ago that everyone wanted the smallest phone, now they want bigger, make up your mind people!!

One thing that I found quite amazing was that the new iphone has a better face id. Retinal something or other. I think that technology will probably spread to other applications and I am glad that they are improving that technology.

There are a few other things that make the new iphone cool. It will be in an all glass design, it will be in gold, dual cameras for depth perception(whatever that means), highest quality video(like videos now are not super fantastic), and wider stereo.

Now I do like the stereo feature. I listen to some free books on my phone. It would be cool to hear them in great stereo sound. But then again, I dont think the price anywhere near justifies the better quality sound.

I am sure there are a few other features that make the new iphone Xs and Xs Max the greatest phones on earth. What I can not fathom is the price on the new iphones. The prices average about $1,000. Holy Shit!!!

  64GB 256GB
iPhone XR $749 $899
iPhone XS $999 $1,149
iPhone XS Max $1,099 $1,249

I dont know about you, but I dont have a grand to throw down on a phone. Actually I do have $1,000 to spend on a phone. If I wanted to I could spend the $1,250, pay for the super duper insurance at $30 per month. I could take the highest quality photos with depth perception. People would say, “That Rick Guy is the coolest dude I know”.

The problem is, that is not what I want people to say. Truthfully I dont want or care if people talk about me. I would rather concentrate on building a passive income that I can retire on. I do that by not spending $1,000 every couple of years on a tool that can be had for $150 that is VERY similar. Its kinda like the cars that I have had in my life(I have only owned 4 cyl cars).

When I was doing the research for this blog post I saw in one of the comments that someone mentioned that they were going to call their doctor. They said they didnt really need that extra kidney, but they needed that new iphone. Kinda funny.

My phone is the Samsung J7, cost about $149. It was actually free when I switched from Sprint($92 per month) to Metro PCS($50 per month). For an extra $10 per month I get a WiFi hotspot that I can cancel anytime without penalty. I might end up getting rid of that feature because I hardly use it.

The truly great thing is that the plan is not really a plan at all. If I want to change service, I change service. No contracts, I am not tied to them for 2 years at a time. They have great phones that I can BUY, NOT LEASE whenever I want. I have heard that with some mobile phone companies you can only lease, WOW, talk about a money waster.

My deal is unlimited everything, except the hotspot. I think I have something like 10Gigs on the hotspot. I have only used about 1gig per month, but that is because I usually use my laptop at the house or office where I have my own internet service.

Did I mention that I pay a total of $60 per month? That is taxes and all that other crap included. $60 for one phone unlimited talk, text and data with the hotspot. You can also get $40 per line at 5Gigs per month or $30 per line with 2Gigs per month. You can have as many phones as you want on each plan. Something worth looking into.

Haters are going to hate and they always will. What about the service? I travel and I NEED service everywhere. Sprint uses the T-Mobile towers. They cover 99% of the US and you can add on other countries for additional fees if you are a world traveler.

But anyway, back to the new iphone. My Samsung J7 does everything that iphone Xs or Xs Max does. My phone is not gold, I dont have super wide stereo, I dont have dual cameras for depth perception and I dont have the smartest chip in the industry. What I do have is a great phone that was free.

I can access the internet, take great pictures, great videos, post to facebook, instagram, twitter and anything else I want to do.

I have had this phone for almost a year now. It works just as good as when I bought it. I have found that I can limit the background stuff and my battery still lasts over a day and a half. That means that I get emails when I ask for them, not every 5 or 6 or 8 minutes, interupting me and making me look at my phone every little while.

Another benefit from limiting the background apps from running is that facebook is not going off every little while.  When you make it a point to limit the junk in your life, you will find that you have so much more time in your life. With the more time that you have, you find that life gets so much more enjoyable.

So let me bottom line it for you. Become more aware of what you are spending your money on. If you take that extra $50 for a phone and $30 for insurance over the next few years you will have a few extra thousand $$ to invest in real estate or the stock market or pay off some bills.

Re-examine the everyday things in your life. You will find so much money that you didnt even realize that you were spending. Sometimes its the little things that will make the big differences in your life. These little things end up turning into bigger things that you will be amazed at.

If you spend lots of time watching videos, looking at facebook, etc. you are spending WAY too much time on your phone. Get off the phone and make some money. That is how you are going to become financially independent and be able to quit your job. Nobody made money or was able to retire early from spending too much time on their phone, even if it is the new iphone Xs Max.

You guys are going to have so much money left over at the end of the month that you can lend it to me to buy more real estate!!

Prost
